Intentional Ministries

Over the year, the group memorizes 30 verses, one a week. In discipleship, the aim is not information but transformation. Having Scripture in your memory gives you immediate recall during times of temptation, decision-making, or spiritual warfare. Psalm 119:11 says, "I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you."

Three foundational principles:

  1. Make it a priority. You will never be successful at Scripture memory unless it becomes a priority during your daily devotional habits.
  2. Practice regularly. Consistency is crucial. Dedicate time each day to this discipline.
  3. Enjoy the Scripture. Our goal is to know God's Word and to obey it. Take time to meditate on the truth of the verse and apply it to your life.

Methods that work:

  • Topic, reference, Scripture, reference. Associate the verse with a topic and practice the pattern. This helps you recall the verse whether the topic or the reference is mentioned first.
  • Break the Scripture into phrases. Memorize each phrase individually, then piece them together.
  • Create an acronym for lists. In school, I was taught "ROY G BIV" for the colors of the rainbow. The same principle works with Scripture.
  • Understand the context. I visualize the memorized verse like the hook of a hanger, and the context hangs on that hanger.
  • Use the verse actively. Work it into your daily conversations and prayers.
  • Recite out loud. Speaking the verses out loud is more difficult than reciting them in your head, and it builds confidence.
  • Repetition. It is the most time-tested method for embedding information in long-term memory.

Don't make excuses. Everyone is busy, and it is difficult to memorize Scripture. Every year, guys tell me they cannot memorize Scripture, but at the same time, they can quote facts about their favorite hobby. You can memorize it if it is important to you.
